(CNN) - After 42 years of protection, the Yellowstone grizzly bear has been removed from the endangered species list.
The Fish and Wildlife Service from the US Department of Interior made the announcement Thursday.Secretary of the Interior Ryan Zinke called it “one of America’s great conservation successes.”
De-listing the grizzly is opposed by a number of conservation groups and several Native American tribes, and the move is likely to open a hunting season on grizzlies.
Yellowstone Park said it is reviewing the report.
