(RNN/AP) - Nicolas Cage will finally get to play Superman, just not the way he first envisioned.
The Oscar-winning actor will voice the Man of Steel in the animated "Teen Titans GO! to the Movies" a full-length film with the characters from the Cartoon Network series.
Cage had been set to don the cape and tights for "Superman Lives," a movie that went into development in 1998. It had plenty of A-list talent - with Tim Burton as director and co-written by Kevin Smith - but was canceled a few weeks before filming was to begin.
The story behind the failed feature was shown in the documentary "The Death of 'Superman Lives': What Happened?"
Cage is a major Superman fan. The actor named his son Kal-El, which was Superman's Kryptonian birth name. He also once sold an issue of Superman's 1938 debut comic for $2.1 million.

Singer Halsey and rapper Lil Yachty will add their voices to the movie, playing Wonder Woman and Green Lantern, respectively.
"Every superhero in the DC Universe has an impact on the fans, so we felt a great responsibility to find a voice for each character that would not only suit the role, but the playful tone of the Titans," said executive producer Sam Register.
"Teen Titans GO! to the Movies" is scheduled for theaters in July.
