9-year-old saves family dog from house fire

PHOENIX, AZ (KPHO/CNN) - A 9-year-old boy in Arizona is being called a hero for quickly getting himself and his dog to safety during a house fire.

Firefighters arrived to the home down the block from the state capitol when flames were up into the attic and the house was full of smoke.

Caleb Barker, 9, was home alone heard a noise, and went to check it out.

"I opened the door and smoke got up inside the house so I had to close it with all my muscle. I closed it, tucked and rolled," Barker said.

Tucked and rolled, with his dog Snowball in tow. He saved one dog and a neighbor snagged the other.

His quick-thinking brought praise from firefighters and relief from his mom.

"I'm just really proud and he knew what he was supposed to do," his mother said.

Firefighters cautioned that pets usually get out of a burning home on their own.

In this case, Barker’s dog ran right to him when he called so he was easy to grab.

Investigators are looking for the cause of the fire.
