CORPUS CHRISTI, TX (KGNS/KRIS/CNN) - Rosamaria Hernandez, 10, is caught up in an immigration tug of war.
Federal agents are taking the little girl, who has cerebral palsy, to a detention center in San Antonio after her emergency surgery.
She's undocumented, but has been in the U.S. most of her life.
The situation escalated a few days ago.
Rosamaria's doctors in Laredo sent her to Driscoll Children's Hospital for emergency gall bladder surgery.
In order to come to Corpus Christi, she crossed a border checkpoint, where she was stopped. Border Patrol then followed her to the hospital for the surgery.
Rosamaria left the hospital Wednesday morning in custody.
There's a possibility she'll be deported to Mexico, a place she hasn't been since she was 3 months old.
"She ignores everything that's happening around her," her mother Felipa De La Cruz said through a translator. "When she realizes her family isn't with her, she's going to start to cry."
De La Cruz is in agony. "I don't know what they're going to come out with," she said.
On top of that, De La Cruz said she is worried about what Rosamaria is feeling.
The girl doesn't understand what's happening. De La Cruz said her daughter has the mentality of a 6-year-old.
"She's going to start to get uncomfortable, and she may hurt her surgery scars," she said.
Her attorney said Rosamaria may be at the detention facility for up to three weeks while immigration officers look at her case.
From there, investigators will decide if the girl goes back to her family in Laredo or gets deported to Mexico.
"I don't want them to deport her. Mexico isn't safe, and she needs therapy, her doctors," De La Cruz said.
