WAUKESHA COUNTY, WI (WISN/CNN) - A 16-year-old Wisconsin boy has died of an apparent opioid overdose.
He's among the youngest victims the Milwaukee County Medical Examiner's Office has ever seen.
According to the medical examiner's report, the boy was found on the northwest side of Milwaukee near an intersection.
Police said when they arrived on the scene, they found the boy slumped over in the backseat of his car.
Sara Schreiber with the medical examiner’s office said all signs point to an overdose.
"The vast majority seem to fall in the middle-age range between 40 and 60 years old, but we are definitely broadening that range and including more individuals every day," Schreiber said.
According to their report, the teen was a known drug user with a history of cocaine use.
It also said he recently started using heroin and given his age, Schreiber said this was a unique case.
It was Monday night when the boy and his friend were reportedly at a party in Dousman and were kicked out.
The two drove to Milwaukee, where the boy eventually passing out in the backseat.
"We are struggling with that every day as to what the newest trending substances are. The fact that it's hitting younger and younger populations is definitely a cause for concern," Schreiber said.
The official cause of death is still unknown pending the results of a toxicology report due in about 30 days.
