NEW MEXICO (KRQE/CNN) - A New Mexico woman is fighting for her life after being diagnosed with a Hantavirus infection.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said people can become infected through contact with Hantavirus-infected rodents or their urine and droppings.

According to the CDC website, infection with Hantavirus can progress to Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome, which can be fatal.

Rodent control in and around the home is the best way to prevent Hantavirus infection.

There are four rodents that carry the virus in the U.S., according to the CDC.

Money being collected for the woman through a YouCaring page will most likely go towards medical expenses, according to her mother, Julie Barron.
