TULARE, CA (KFSN/CNN) - Five people on a bus going to California’s Bay Area from Las Vegas were hurt when a woman held a three-year-old at knifepoint and stabbed the girl’s mother.

Passengers said the woman was talking to herself and acting strangely after boarding the bus in Bakersfield.

Around 60 miles after the woman got on, a passenger said the woman grabbed the 3-year-old from the mother and started hitting her.

She then stabbed the mother and held the child at knifepoint before two passengers and the driver subdued her.

One of those passengers said he almost got injured in the melee.

"A lady showed a knife and started to get hysterical. Started stabbing at the mother and that's when I had jumped up and tried to grab the knife and almost got stabbed myself,” said Nathan Wanhala.

The suspect stabbed herself in the neck before the men got the knife away from her.

Doctors performed emergency surgery on the mother to treat her abdominal stab-wound.

The Tulare County Sheriff's Office identified the suspect as Teresa Ann Andrade Madrigal.
