Woman gives birth to 13 pound baby on Father's Day

WATERLOO, IA (KWWL/CNN) - A mom in Iowa has a big bundle of joy, literally. She gave birth to a baby girl that weighs as much as an average three-month old.

"I guess she just decided she wanted to come on Father's Day and just woke up,” mother Sharnishea Callahan said. Clearly a daddy's girl, Layla Rose arriving on Sunday evening weighing 13 pounds.

"She's had a big baby before and that helps, but I don't think anybody knew it was going to be that big,” said Dr. Marilyn Hines of the Covenant Medical Center. Doctors say had they been able to do an ultrasound which was scheduled for Tuesday, Layla wouldn't have been born naturally. "And she was pretty proud of it,” Hines said.

Callahan says even after the weigh in, she's happy she didn't have a C-section. "We expected her to be like 9 or 10 pounds, but not this big. But I have had a C-section and a VBAC  before, and VBACs are a lot better to recover from especially having more kids at home," the mother said.

And if you are still trying to wrap your head around just how heavy Layla is, she weighs as much as a watermelon, or the average weight of a 3-month-old baby. The mom and the baby are doing well.

They're spending their first night out of the hospital on Tuesday.
