Woman dies in aqueduct while talking to mother

HESPERIA, CA (Loudlabs/CNN) - A young woman died early Friday after her car crashed into an aqueduct in Hesperia, CA.

Witnesses said the car veered over the white fog line, hit a curb, went through a fence and into the aqueduct.

The woman called her mother for help, but she apparently drowned with her sinking car.

The San Bernardino County Sheriff's dive team recovered the body of 24-year-old Xanthel Linares later Friday morning.

Family members at the scene identified her.

"My younger sister was on the phone with my mom when the accident happened, she was telling her that she was going under water,” the victim’s sister Annette Linares said.

Friday's scene is not far from where a car carrying 31-year-old Christine Estrada and her three young children went into the aqueduct in March.

In that crash, the woman and two of her children were killed, one of whom was not found until two weeks later.

Both the Linares and Estrada families have gone to Hesperia city hall to speak to city officials to demand stronger barriers around the aqueduct, and to look into how divers respond to emergencies there.
