We now have an update to the mystery of a fetus found in the Augusta Water Treatment Facility back in May.

On May 7, deputies were called out to the water treatment plant where an employee had discovered a fetus in the plant. A Richmond County deputy coroner responded to the scene and pronounced the 20-week-old fetus dead.

The next day, a woman approached the sheriff's office to inform them about an incident she believed to be related to the fetus. According to a sheriff's office incident report, she was told about news outlets reporting on the fetus. She told investigators she went to University Hospital on May 4. She was 16 weeks pregnant at the time and experiencing "contractions." While at the hospital, she experienced miscarriage in the bathroom. After receiving help from nurses, a doctor went to the bathroom to investigate. She heard the toilet flush.

The woman says she was later informed about the miscarriage and was told "everything went down the drain." She told investigators she believes she is the mother of the fetus.
