CHICO, CA (KRCR/CNN) - For the second time in two years, a grandmother will give birth to her own daughter’s child. When it happened a year ago, it made national news.
“We did such a good job the first time. Wait ‘til you see him,” said Megan Barker, referring to her 1-year-old grandson, Gus, who she carried in her womb.
Gus was the product of an embryo created by Barker’s daughter, Maddie, and Maddie’s husband, Tyler Coleman. They were unable to conceive for medical reasons.
Now the grandma is willing to do it again so Gus will have a sibling.
Maddie Coleman said it’s important to her and her husband that their child have a sibling.
“We thought about Gus growing up by himself and wondering, why did my parents want me to be conceived in the way that I was? she said. “I feel like being able to relate on that level with somebody else so close to him will be great as far as a sibling goes.”
At the time of the second child’s birth, probably in September, Barker will be 50. But she’s confident in her health to carry the child full term.
“It’s not a concern for me. I’ve already done it once and the pregnancy was fantastic. I felt good,” Barker said. “And because I’m able to do it, I’m happy that I’m able to do it.”
