BAYTOWN, TX (KTRK/CNN) – Prosecutors say a 19-year-old woman in Texas planned to rob her New Year’s Eve date of his guns and ended up killing him.
Because Yvonne Raquel Ramirez, 19, is healing from a gunshot wound to the shoulder, she didn’t appear before a Harris County judge Monday when prosecutors presented their case.
Investigators say Ramirez recently met victim Joshua McKinney, and the two had been spending time together.
Ramirez allegedly stole McKinney’s guns and demanded $2,000 in exchange for the weapons.
When the two met up, a witness says McKinney got violent. He grabbed Ramirez, put her in a neck hold and put a pistol to her head.
"The witness said he ran inside the house to notify family to call 911 when he heard several shots,” a prosecutor said.
McKinney was found dead in the street, while Ramirez had been shot in the shoulder.
Ramirez told officers it was self-defense. She said the gun dropped, fired and killed McKinney, but prosecutors say the story didn’t add up.
"Officers advised the defendant claimed to be shot by the complainant and returned fire by utilizing his hand gun after he dropped it, resulting in his death,” a prosecutor said.
Another witness told detectives Ramirez tried staging McKinney’s body as he died in the street.
Prosecutors say they believe the suspect stole the victim’s wallet before being taken to the hospital.
Ramirez is being held on a $50,000 bond.
Deputies are investigating if anyone else was involved.
