(CNN) - A controversial sheriff from Wisconsin has resigned from his post. The Milwaukee County clerk says Sheriff David Clarke turned in his resignation on Thursday.
Clarke, a loyal supporter of President Donald Trump, had served since 2002. He's known for his often jaw-dropping rhetoric and incendiary conservative commentary.
Clarke has been reviled by civil rights advocates, and criticized for his management of the county jail. He raised his national profile as a regular surrogate for the Trump campaign.
CNN obtained his resignation letter, and in it he did not provide any reasons for his departure.
