TREVOR, WI (WITI/CNN) - A man has been charged in the hit-and-run death of biker Jackie Hutcheson Jr., after telling his wife he thought he hit a deer.

Ryan Peterson, 39, admitted drinking before and after he hit what he thought was an animal on Sunday. His wife called police 16 hours after the collision to inform them that her husband hit an object along the roadside about the time of the biker’s death.

Peterson turned himself in and admitted drinking. He has been charged with hit-and run, and homicide by negligent operation of a vehicle, WITI reports.

Hutcheson, or JJ, was riding his bike on the gravel shoulder of a road, the report said. A motorist noticed the bike on the side of the road and JJ’s unresponsive body was discovered.

JJ’s parents were distraught, noting the time lapse between the accident and the phone call from Peterson’s wife.
