(CNN) - Amid the devastation of Harvey, the compassion of strangers shines through.

People donating food, water and shelter to survivors. Others have been caught on camera saving lives.

No matter where you live, you can help the people impacted by Hurricane Harvey.

But beware of phony charities.

Scam artists attempt to capitalize on Americans' generosity after a major crisis by using things like bogus websites, emails, social media accounts and fake crowdfunding campaigns.

Steer clear of suspicious websites. Beware of unsolicited emails and phone calls.

Never open emails purporting to show photos of disaster areas because they may be viruses hackers can use to steal your information.

And do your homework on the organization to ensure money you give goes to the right place.

If you suspect fraud, call the National Center for Disaster Fraud at (866) 720-5721.
