(RNN) – What time should you send your child to bed?
Creative Child Magazine posted a chart of suggested bedtimes on Its Facebook page that has parents in an internet-driven in an uproar.
The chart, which came from Mommy Moment, was part of an article suggesting ways to schedule activities to complete homework, how to establish a routine to get kids ready for bed and tips to help them fall asleep (Quiet, soothing music; warm milk; eat a small potato; a warm bath with Epsom salts; brushing teeth, reading a story, prayer; etc.)
Most of the criticism was directed at the relatively late 11 p.m. bedtime for 18-year-olds and the early bedtimes for younger children, because they’re likely to wake up before dawn and roust the parents.
Experts – and grandmothers everywhere – agree that kids need sleep to grow, stay healthy and do well in school. Parents do, too.
Good Housekeeping wrote that the CDC, American Academy of Sleep Medicine and American Academy of Pediatrics agree on how much sleep children should get as they grow older.
- Infants 4 to 12 months: 12 to 16 hours (including naps)
- Toddlers 1 to 2 years: 11 to 14 hours (including naps)
- Preschoolers 3 to 5 years: 10 to 13 hours (including naps)
- Gradeschoolers: 6 to 12 years: 9 to 12 hours
- Teens: 13 to 18 years: 8 to 10 hours
