Wedding DJ admits to stealing money from couple

Posted

YUKON, PA (WTAE/CNN) — State police in Belle Vernon said Edward McCarty admitted to stealing cards, with money inside, from a bride and groom while DJing their wedding.

"I came home with 15 cards and I had 120 guests," said bride Ashley Karasek.

Police said McCarty admitted to stealing their cards, saying he took the money because he was having financial problems. However, he claims he took only about $600.

Karasek believes the total was greater - about $4,800 - and said she is calling all of her guests to get an accurate amount.

McCarty is charged with theft and receiving stolen property.

It's not how the Karaseks planned to spend the first months of their marriage - court hearings and trying to track down how much money they were given at their July wedding.

"Most of my guests have come forward and said how much they gave us, so that was nice that we didn't have to ask them," Karasek said.

The DJ kept the card box behind his DJ booth. Guests told the bride that they gave him the cards, and he put the cards in the box.

Since the story first aired, other couples have come forward, wondering if McCarthy took money from them, too.
