Wayward whale appears in California marina

Posted

LONG BEACH, CA (KTLA/CNN) - A wayward whale turned up in a marina in Long Beach, CA, Monday.

Long Beach Marina restaurant owner Denise Lund said she heard a rumor about a sighting in the water Monday morning but thought nothing of it.

"Everybody jumped up and ran away from their table and everybody was like, 'Where is everybody going? What happened? There's something happening," Lund said.

After all it's not every day you see a gray whale up close and personal.

"It came out and it was swimming and everybody was following it down to a brick building, then it turned around somehow. It was so huge I don't even know how it turned around," Lund said.

Marine animal rescue officials said it's the same juvenile whale spotted in Newport Harbor earlier this month after migrating from Baja without its mother.

Experts are concerned.

They said the animal was recently stuck in a salt marsh for two days and appears malnourished.

In the past, rescuers tried using fire hoses to push the animal out of the shallows but not this time around.

Hoping to spirit of any more stress and hoping it will soon make its way to deeper waters.
