(CNN) - Volvo will soon test a radical new style of garbage truck.
The truck drives itself, backing down streets in reverse and using laser sensors to make stops at garbage cans.
Volvo Trucks chief technology officer says it's more time-efficient that way so the garbage man can stay near the rear to load the trash.
The company will begin tests on a closed course next month. It will shift to public streets in late fall.
