SURPRISE, AZ (KNXV/CNN) - Every night, a neighborhood group of scorpion hunters sets out on foot.
Armed with lethal spray and a black light, they kill anywhere from 30 to 300.
“We have caught over 20,000 in the past three years,” said Gwynn Hagen, who leads the pack.
Hagen said she never thought she would spend her retirement as a volunteer exterminator.
“I realized how many people were having such a large problem with the scorpions,” she said. “We thought, well, something has to be done. Why not us?”
But the nightly routine has turned into good exercise.
“We map out areas to do, to cover our entire community, because it’s pretty large,” Hagen said. And actually, it’s a lot of fun. They don’t plan to quit providing this free service any time soon.
