Vietnam vet finds, returns lost WWII medals to man’s family

RALEIGH, NC (WRAL/CNN) - Just before Christmas Victoria Fels got a phone call she will never forget.

“I got a call from these people from Warrenton, MO, saying they’d tracked me down as a Fels in Raleigh, NC and they said they had my father-in-law’s medals.”

Fels learned a Vietnam veteran found the items on a back shelf in the Veterans of Foreign Wars office when the unnamed person started tracking down relatives of the American hero.

The returned medals were those Fels didn’t know existed. She said she has no idea how the medals ended up in Missouri but she's happy to have them now.

The medals were lost when a professional cleaning crew helped clean out her mother-in-law's house 11 years ago.

Returned to the family were the Medal of Honor, Medal of Valor, and discharge papers.

“I cried”…It was just such a nice kind thing to do.“
