VIDEO: Chemical inferno creates gateway to Hell

Posted

WORLAND, WY (RNN) - An inferno fit for the depths of Hades ignited Friday night, sparking a swift response from the Worland Fire Protection District.

According to the department, a "sulfur mound" had been set fire to, releasing a hazardous gas called "sulfur dioxide."

Luckily, no one was injured in or near the blaze and firefighters managed to stop the fire before it got any worse.

"WFD was able to position apparatus in a safe location and lay in a line to extinguish the fire," the department wrote on Facebook. "We captured the video, while in full PPE and wearing SCBA's during a size up of the situation, as crews were setting up for suppression."

But if you can look past the deadly fumes, the fires created by these chemical reactions were quite magnificent. There were even a few small, fiery tornadoes that spawned throughout the fire.

The sulfur deposits are left over from the Texas Gulf Sulfur Plant, which operated in north Worland during the 1950s.
