Video captures car splitting in half, hitting store

CANOGA PARK, CA (KCAL/KCBS/CNN) -  A young man was killed when his car careened out of control, hitting a fire hydrant and crashing into two businesses. It happened near the intersection of De Soto and Sherman Way in Canoga Park.

The crash was caught on camera. Security video captures the moments a speeding Honda Accord slams into two businesses around 2 a.m. The car loses control and careens sideways into an auto collision shop and car dealership.

The fire hydrant is sheared off, and the Honda torn apart. One half of the car is thrown onto the opposite side of the street. The 21-year-old driver is killed on impact.

“I saw the video: It looks like a bomb came in and exploded,” dealership general manager Asher Peretz said on Tuesday. He says he can always repair his store, and feels bad for the life that was lost.

Outside the business, among the shattered glass, empty marijuana containers and beer cases. LAPD traffic investigators say they believe speed and alcohol were factors in the wreck.

Witnesses reported seeing the car speeding multiple times up and down the street, but investigators have ruled out that anyone else was involved.

“That's somebody's child,” said Tasha Irwing, who lives nearby. She rushed to the scene afraid it might be her kids. She and other neighbors say too many people drive too fast on this street. “We have about an accident at least once a week,” Irwing said.

“People just use it as their own speedway,” a woman said. Many say they are shocked at the severity of the crash, and feel for the man's family.  “My heart goes out to the family,” Irwing said.
