Vegas shooting survivor loses home to CA wildfire

SANTA ROSA, CA (CNN) – A woman who survived the mass shooting at the Route 91 Harvest Festival returned to her parents’ house just in time to help her family evacuate before their home burned to the ground.

A former firefighter and paramedic, Michella Flores says she’s seen her fair share of emergencies, but after she became a victim herself, she’s begun to see things from a different perspective.

Flores, who works as a flight attendant, flew into Las Vegas on the morning of Oct. 1. While waiting for her flight out, she decided to head down to the festival to listen to Jason Aldean from outside the fence.

As she was listening, she began to hear gunshots. Once she realized what she was hearing, she ran to a nearby casino to hide.

Flores says she didn’t sleep that night and spent the next four days working.

When she finally returned home to Santa Rosa, CA, Flores headed to her parents’ house, where she was staying during the process of moving to another home.

As she drove to the house, the former firefighter could see the glow of the fire and knew it was close. She also knew based on the wind direction, the fire could be headed right for them, even though the house wasn't under an evacuation order.

Flores told her parents to start packing their things, and within five minutes, the fire had reached their driveway.

Overnight, the house burned to the ground.

"It's very surreal at this point. You look at the house, and you just... You can't... It doesn't register. You just know there's... You try to find things in the ash, and we're worried about everybody else. I mean we're living out of an evacuation center for a little bit. There's a ton of people there, so it's hard to think about processing it because there's a lot going on still,” Flores said.

After surviving two tragedies in the same month, Flores says she felt unlucky, but she recognizes others are even less fortunate than she is.

Even though her parents weren’t able to grab anything before evacuating, Flores says she’s thankful the family will be able to move into the rental she was preparing.

Flores says she still hasn’t come to terms with what she’s faced this month and knows she’ll have to grapple with it eventually.

"Right now, I would say I'm probably not processing it. There's tasks that need to be done. Unfortunately or fortunately – I guess, fortunately – the world does keep going, so there's things that need to be done,” Flores said.
