(CNN) - The U.S. is slapping new sanctions on two senior North Korean officials. On Tuesday, the treasury department blocked them from making financial transactions with anyone from the U.S.
Those officials are involved in North Korea's ballistic missile program. The U.S. believes the rogue nation is using a web of front companies to dodge existing international sanctions.
So the Trump administration is hoping the new ban will cut the cash flow for the regime's weapons programs. The move follows the test of a new ballistic missile last month, that North Korea says can hit the U.S. with a nuclear warhead.
The treasury department's latest step follows a decision by the UN Security Council on Friday to impose new stronger sanctions on North Korea.
The move is a bid to halt North Korea’s ability to raise illicit funds.
