(CNN) - The U.S. Navy says guided missile destroyer USS Howard provided assistance to an Iranian fishing vessel after a piracy attack south of the Yemeni island of Socotra on Tuesday.

A U.S. Navy spokesperson said the Iranian Coast Guard called U.S. naval forces to report the incident and seek assistance for the fishing vessel.

The Navy coordinated with the European Union Naval Force and the Turkish-led Combined Task Force in the region to respond to the fishing vessel's call.

Food and water were provided, and repairs to the ship were done. At least one Iranian fishermen was killed and three others injured as a result of the suspected pirate attack. The Navy said that medical aid also was provided to the three who were injured.
