(CNN) - United Airlines says it's investigating after mistakenly flying a Kansas family's dog to Japan.
Kansas resident Kara Swindle said when she went to pick up her 10-year-old German shepherd, Irgo, from a United Airlines cargo facility in Kansas City, a Great Dane that was supposed to be flown to Japan was there instead and Irgo was actually in Japan.
Swindle said Irgo had no food or water on the 16.5-hour flight there and went three days without his ear infection medication.
Swindle told CNN that Irgo is set to be flown back from Naruto, Japan, to Denver, CO, Wednesday evening, flying first class with a human escort.
Irgo will then be flown from Denver to Wichita, KS, where Swindle will pick him up. Arrangements were also made to return the Great Dane to its owner.
United has apologized for the mix-up and said they are reaching out to the vendor kennel to investigate.
This is United's second dog-related incident in the headlines this week. On March 12, a passenger was made to store her dog in an overhead bin on a United Airlines flight taking off from Houston.
By the time they landed in New York, the dog had died.
