LOS ANGELES(KCAL/KCBS/CNN) - Boeing's iconic 747 jetliner will soon be a thing of the past.
Many domestic airlines are replacing the double-decker jumbo jet with newer and more efficient planes.
The Boeing 747 revolutionized long-distance air travel when it was introduced back in 1969.
Now, United Airlines is giving it one final tour around the country before the airline retires the 747 from its fleet.
On Monday at LAX, United employees got to bid farewell to the "queen of the skies."
"The airplane is true - it's reliable," said United 747 First Officer Frank McDonald III. "It has carried millions of people millions of miles. And I have had the pleasure of flying the plane for a decade."
The 747's last flight will be 1970s themed, and leaves on Nov. 7, taking passengers from San Francisco to Honolulu.
The flight sold out in less than two hours.
