DENVER (KDVR/CNN) - Uber got hit with an $8.9 million fine on Monday.
Officials said the fine was a result of the ride-sharing company's hiring of dozens of Colorado drivers with criminal and motor-related offenses.
Despite those legal issues, Uber allowed the drivers to work for the past 18 months.
The Colorado Public Utilities Commission charged them $2,500 for each day a disqualified driver was on the clock.

"In some places, we couldn't even tell that they did a background check at all and we found felony convictions and DUIs," said Doug Dean, who works for the Public Utilities Commission. "In some cases, we found that they did show DUIs, revoked licenses and felonies, and [Uber] allowed them to drive anyway."
Uber has been in Colorado since 2014.
The investigation into this issue came about after police investigated an Uber driver accused of assault.
