DALLAS (CNN) - A Dallas County Commissioner candidate told reporters he has a trust fund established for his children that rewards them for marrying straight, white Christians.
Vickers Cunningham told the Dallas Morning News it was a move to support his belief in "traditional family values."
Cunningham said he cannot change the terms of the trust.
He also noted that his children wouldn't be punished for marrying outside of their race, but they wouldn't be able to access parts of the trust.
Cunningham says his views have changed on interracial marriage since he opened the trust in 2010.
In their rebuke of Cunningham, the paper said Cunnighams’s brother told them the candidate used the N-word for years.
The paper has since withdrawn its endorsement.
Cunningham denies using the word.
The editorial board wrote that the move was "based on several pieces of information that have come to light in the final days of this campaign."
