(RNN) - President Donald Trump is likely to end protections for immigrants who were brought into the United States as children, but only after a six-month delay, Reuters and the Associated Press report.

The White House plans a formal announcement on Tuesday of the decision on the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, known as DACA, White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders.said in a statement. 

Implemented in 2012, it gives about 800,000 people who arrived in the country undocumented, brought here by their parents, the ability to work legally in the US,, as well as other rights, such as attending college. 

The decision is expected to ignite backlash, with groups of "dreamers" already in the midst of protests.
