(CNN) - President Trump requested Japanese automakers to build their cars in the United States.

The request came at a state banquet in Japan that included top executives from automakers, including Toyota and Mazda.

"Try building your cars in the United States instead of shipping them over," Trump said. "Is that possible to ask? That's not rude. Is that rude? I don't think so."

But Japanese automakers already do that.

Several Japanese automakers, including Toyota, Nissan, Honda and Acura, already have huge factories in the U.S. where millions of cars are manufactured each year.
