SACRAMENTO, CA (KOVR/CNN) - A rolling convoy of trucks from around California drove slow and made noise in protest of a new regulation.
Adam Atwal is protesting the "electronic logging devices," or ELDs, which he said will put truck drivers on 14-hour timers.
Atwal said that could put him and other truckers in danger.
"My 14 hours could be up on a ramp, and you might catch me sleeping, so where's the safety in that," Atwal said. "When we are sitting and waiting for loading and unloading, we are not getting paid for that and the clock is still running."
Atwal said truckers get paid by the mile. Time spent at the docks would cut into their driving time, and their 14-hour shift.
Advocates said the electronic devices would regulate truckers' hours, which they believe would prevent them from getting into bad accidents.
Trucker Sunny Grewal disagrees with that idea.
"You're going to make mistakes. they're saying it's safer, it's not," Grewal said.
He said that ELDs are only going to overwork truck drivers.
The California Trucking Association released a statement Friday in response to the rolling protest.
It said that they support truckers' opinions, but do not condone unsafe and illegal activities, including creating dangerous driving conditions by impeding traffic on busy freeways.
Bottom line, truckers said they want flexibility with their hours, and not to feel like every shift is a race against the clock.
