Train carrying human waste emptied

The smell in Parrish that we've been reporting on for weeks is now moving out.

Mayor Heather Hall is relieved to get rid of the smell her town has been dealing with for a couple of months.

People living near the train tracks say their town has been smelling like a backed-up toilet. On Wednesday, Mayor Hall says the last railcar carrying human waste from Big Sky Environmental has now been emptied and awaiting transport back north.

The type of human waste known as a "biosolid" has been coming in from New York City and other areas. Hall says small towns shouldn't be dumping grounds.

"If one incident can cause this kind of backlog in a town 2,000 miles or 1,500 miles away, you have a problem with the system you’re using. I really think they need to look into it and see what they can do to fix it," Hall said.

About 60 empty railcars are still sitting on the tracks. Hall says she's planning on speaking with lawmakers about this situation to see what can be done to make sure it doesn't happen again.
