WEST FARGO, ND (KVLY/CNN) - A West Fargo woman is upset about a new pet policy at her townhome complex.
Management is now requiring pet owners to provide a swab of their pet's DNA.
The policy helps managers track down people who aren't cleaning up after their pets.
Kelly Burke is a self-proclaimed dog lover and an owner of two dogs.
She said she received an email from her townhome's management, Meridian Property, that caught her off guard.
"It stipulated that all pets would have to be subject to a DNA test, and I did determine it was a swab,” Burke said. “That was something that we as tenants would have to pay for, for each pet."
That means Burke will be out $100.
That is what it costs to have the two dogs tested.
"It's better that it gets cleaned up then some kid running to the park, steps through it with his feet and ends up with feces on his shoes," Burke said. “That's disgusting to me."
Burke admits she's enjoyed living in the property for the past three years, but she thinks this new policy is a little too much.
"I think this is very extreme and unfortunately, it's just my opinion,” Burke said. “This is a way for them to try to collect additional fees from their tenants."
A Meridian Property manager said they aren't the only ones in the area implementing such a policy and they're excited about it.
He said many tenants came to them with concerns about what their neighbor's pets were leaving behind.
