STAMFORD, Conn. (AP) — NBC Sports will use Mike Tirico as the host of its inaugural Indianapolis 500 coverage in May.

Network executives made the announcement Friday.

Tirico has anchored some of the world's biggest sporting events including the Olympics, the World Cup, the Kentucky Derby, The Masters, the British Open golf tournament, Wimbledon and major college bowl games. He's also been the host of NBC's Football Night in America coverage for Sunday Night Football, the Stanley Cup Final and this year's NHL All-Star Game.

He will add the world's largest single-day sporting event to the list on May 26.

Tirico says it will be "fabulous" to see the race in person for the first time.

The IndyCar season opens March 10 at St. Petersburg.
