RAMSGATE, KENT, England (RNN) - An extreme weather system dubbed "Beast from the East" caused havoc throughout Europe, and it caused thousands of dead starfish to wash ashore on a British beach.

Twitter user Chris Constantine posted video of the scene from Sunday on the southeastern England coastline. In a follow-up post, he said they often see dead starfish there after storms but never in this quantity.

The storm system brought severe cold from Siberia throughout much of Europe for a week, with blizzards, snow and temperatures as low as minus-22 degrees Fahrenheit. The Red Cross said volunteers from Belarus to Britain ran shelters and provided food, blankets and medical assistance.

The cold conditions affected travel as well, as it shut down Dublin, Ireland and Edinburgh, Scotland, airports through parts of the weekend.
