(CNN) – American banks are facing a new hacking threat.

The scheme is called “jackpotting” and banks are on alert.

Criminals use malware and hacking tools to drain money from ATMs. For them, it’s just like hitting the jackpot.

Stand-along machines are the most vulnerable, according to the U.S. Secret Service. Those sorts of ATMs are more common in places like convenience stores, retailers and pharmacies.

Asia and Europe got hit with jackpotting first. It’s not as common in the United States, yet.

Over the last week, jackpotting thefts in the U.S. have netted more than a $1 million.
