Teens save 3-year-old who ran onto busy highway

MT. JULIET, TN (WTVF/CNN) – Two teenage friends risked their lives the night before Easter to save a little girl, who was just moments away from being hit by oncoming traffic.

Zech Krinjnic, 13, and Dalaurence Holland, 15, were sitting on the 13-year-old’s porch discussing clowns Saturday night when they saw something run out of the nearby bushes.

The two teenagers decided to chase whatever it was.

"I don't know – I guess I'm 15, a teenager – and I thought, 'Let's do something stupid and chase it and see what it is,'" Dalaurence said.

Zech did call 911 first because they didn’t know what they were chasing down.

As the teens got closer, they realized it was a 3-year-old girl, who was headed toward a busy highway in the dark.

There were no parents, no adults around – just the two teenagers – as the young girl approached oncoming traffic.

"I saw headlights coming up the hill, so I was like, ‘There's a truck. That's a little girl. I'm going to grab her,’” Dalaurence said. "Everything in my mind just dropped. My mind went clear, and I focused on getting the kid. I was like, ‘I want to save this kid and let that kid live for Easter.’”

The 15-year-old ran out into the street.

"Right before it would have hit her, he scooped her up and ran out into the middle between both roads,” Zech said.

Only one word could describe how Dalaurance felt.

"Joy. I just started crying and was like, ‘Oh my God, we just did something incredible,’” he said.

The 3-year-old, who had run out of her apartment, was not hurt. Her guardians were interviewed after the incident by Mt. Juliet Police.
