Teen girl narrowly escapes as bullet goes through bedroom floor

MANSFIELD, MA (WCVB/CNN) - A teen in Massachusetts escaped a close call, after a stray bullet flew into her bedroom.

Police said the shot was fired from the apartment below.

A father of three said he was relieved but still reeling after his daughter came to him Monday night with something disturbing.

"She came out with the bullet in her hand," he said.

The parents had no idea where the bullet came from, and with two other children in the home, they initially panicked.

"We didn't know if we were safe or not," the father said.

The bullet pierced through their 15-year-old daughter's bedroom floor, just feet from where she was doing her homework.

The parents got an answer as to where that bullet came from, not long after calling police,

Their downstairs neighbor came to the door not curious about where that bullet came from, but rather where it went.

Police said he is 29-year-old Timothy Downs.

He was in court Tuesday, facing several charges including endangering a child.

He told police it was a mistake - one that could have had grave consequences

Due to additional unrelated charges, Downs is being held without bail.

He's expected to have a hearing later this month.
