NASHVILLE, TN (WZTV/CNN) – A 12-year-old boy is accused of attempting to carjack a woman in a normally peaceful part of Nashville, TN.
The Metropolitan Nashville Police Department said the woman was waiting to pick up her daughter from dance practice around 9 p.m. Monday when two individuals approached her car.
The teen knocked on the car window with a pistol, pointed it at her and yelled, “ ‘Give me your car, don't make me shoot,’ ” according to police.
The victim quickly drove away while calling 911.
Officers later found and arrested the child.
The other suspect is still on the loose.
"That's a little scary and a little alarming for sure for the community," said Michael Knight, spokesperson for the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.
Knight said sometimes older criminals hand off guns to juveniles to carry out crimes.
The ATF is part of a nationwide task force geared to developing strategies to reduce violent crime by identifying problems in existing laws.
Nashville Mayor Megan Barry said everyone has a role to play when it comes to cutting down on crime.
"My plea is for everyone in this community to be stepping up, if you have a 12-year-old or a 14-year-old, you should know where they are and if you have a handgun, you should absolutely know where that is," Barry said.
"It's sad but it's the problem, to my mind the 12-year-old (boy)," said Nashville resident Debbie Fild. "It's a society that lets guns happen everywhere."
