WEST VALLEY, UT (KSTU/CNN) - Doris Rucker Wasden, a 99-year-old grandmother in Utah, was held hostage early Saturday by a teenager, according to police.
"When I look back over it, it was very dangerous what we went through," Wasden said.
Unified police said they tracked down 18-year-old Freddy Alexander Velasquez as a suspect in a shooting in Magna. But when they approached him, he held a gun to his head and ran to a nearby home in West Valley.
Velasquez shot out the back door and made his way into Wasden's home and threatened her family inside, according to police.
"He got Cindy and Jim here and pointed a gun at them," Wasden recalled.
Wasden doesn't hear well so she didn't realize Velasquez was in her home until he confronted her.
"He was just scared, I guess, and he grabbed me by my hands and then I just sit on the floor on my bum so I didn't get hurt,” she explained. “And I just got back in bed and he comes in again and then he started to talk to me. And I said, `I can't hear you, I can't hear you.' So, then he realized I was a very old woman. So, he was pretty nice to me after that."
She says they talked for awhile.
"My brother said I saved my life by just doing that, saved his life," Wasden said.
SWAT negotiated with Velasquez for hours telling him to let Wasden out, which police say he did around 3 a.m.
The standoff finally ended around 5:30 in the morning and Velasquez was arrested.
After a long night and long day with investigators and visits from friends and family, Wasden is still in good spirits.
Her grandson Jim said they all forgive Freddy Velasquez.
"He made a mistake and we don't hold resentment and we just hope that he gets some help and hope that his family is okay," he said.
"I never felt afraid of him, but I and the dog were a little shaky."
Wasden will celebrate her 100th birthday next week.
