Syrian rebel forces breach wall into ISIS capital Raqqa

Posted

(CNN) – Coalition forces are taking the fight against ISIS to the heart of its last remaining strongholds. The militants are now cornered in the old cities of Raqqa, Syria, and Mosul in Iraq.

Coalition leaders call it a key milestone in the fight to liberate Raqqa from ISIS: U.S.-backed Syrian rebels have breached a strategic wall surrounding the old city, and they're now getting ready to move in. They are now within 2 miles of the center of the city.

The old city is the last holdout of ISIS in Raqqa, the militants' self-declared capital.

CNN’s Nick Paton Walsh is following developments from the Iraqi city of Irbil.
