NASHVILLE, TN (WTVF/CNN) - Thousands of residents in Nashville are without power on Tuesday after a man trying to steal items from a substation was shocked. The break-in happened early Tuesday morning at the Craighead Station.

A witness reported hearing a loud boom, and then spotted a man on fire on top of a transformer. Metro Nashville Police said the suspect, Joseph Buhlinger, was badly burned. He was taken to the hospital in critical condition.

Buhlinger, who's homeless, has been charged with theft and vandalism. Police believe he was trying to steal copper wiring from the station.
