AUSTIN, TX (KXAN/CNN) - Police say a man in a Santa suit opened fire on a Halloween party Sunday morning.
One man died, and three people were injured. Randall Gaston Jones, 32, faces murder charges.
The 911 call came in after 6 a.m. Sunday after a Halloween costume party that lasted all night.
Austin police said the suspect had too much to drink.
"The individuals that were left at the residence asked Jones to calm down and go to his room, at which time Jones did go to his room but returned with a firearm," said Lt. Jason Staniszewski.
Police said that's when the suspect fired one shot, and everyone scattered except for one person.
"Michael McCloskey, at that point, tried to protect everybody in the residence and went after Mr. Jones," Staniszewski said.
Police said the victim and the suspect didn't know each other before the party.Several shots were fired. McCloskey was shot.
Jones left the scene and went down the street.
"Officers located the suspect with a gun. The gun was on the ground, and the suspect was taken into custody without incident," Staniszewski said.
McCloskey died at the hospital after 3 p.m. Sunday.
One shooting victim was in serious condition at the hospital. Another victim was taken to the hospital and released. The other refused treatment.
The violence surprised neighbors.
"The neighborhood's very safe. There haven't been any violent crimes or anything like that recently. So as long as we've lived here, the only problems really have been noise complaints." said Peter Russell, a neighbor.
