ARNOLD, MO (KTVI/CNN) - A police officer was shot near the Arnold, MO, police department on Tuesday. The 44-year-old officer was rushed to the hospital, and was taken to surgery in critical condition.
The 28-year-old suspect, Chad Klahs, was pronounced dead at the hospital. Police believe he died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Klahs was well known to police, said Capt. Gary Higgenbotham of the Jefferson County Sheriff Department.
The officer's name is Ryan O'Connor, KTVI reports, saying he had a bullet wound to the back of the head.
The burglary suspect was being transported to the police station when he shot the officer with a gun he had somehow managed to acquire, the report said. The incident is still under investigation.
