Student knocked out by deer during fire drill

EAGLE POINT, OR (KDVR/CNN) - A teenage girl is recovering after she was knocked unconscious by a deer outside of her high school this week.

The incident happened during a fire drill at the school.

Josie Lemley suffered a concussion and had to have stitches.

"Well we were having a fire drill during school hours, and I made it halfway out there and next thing I know I was on the ground,” Lemley said. “I don't remember, I never saw any deer. I think I got hit in the face with a hoof."

That's because the deer that hit her came so fast.

Another student recorded a video right after the incident which showed the deer struggling likely after it broke its leg from the force of the collision.

"The Eagle Point High School was running a fire drill, and upon students exiting the building, there were two deer on campus that we're spooked, and one of them ran into a student that was exiting for the fire drill," said Damian Crowson, an Eagle Point School District member:

The school speculates something, possibly the sound of the alarms, spooked it.

Staff called 911 and Lemley was taken to the hospital.

The school said the incident may affect how the school practices drills in the future.

They may add perimeter checks as part of their drill plan.

For now, Lemley said it was a freak accident that she's glad to walk away from.

"I still don't know how I don't have a broken bone from that," Lemley said.
