KNOXVILLE, TN (WVLT/CNN) - The University of Tennessee is mourning a student who died during a boxing match.
Tanner Wray, 20, was an aerospace engineering student. Police said he collapsed during a traditional match to raise money for charity.
A loved one said he died of cardiac arrest.
Students comforted one another with memories of their classmate and fraternity brother.
"People came here for one reason, and that's for Tanner," said Lucas Grinnill, a Chi Phi Fraternity brother.
Just outside the doors of the Chi Phi house, Wray's frat brothers lit candles in his honor, symbolizing an eternal bond and a never-ending brotherhood.
"He was a genius, an athlete, a great friend, a brother, meaner than hell, a competitor, he was fierce, he was feisty," Grinnill said. "All these things you know, tied up to make one great package of the man that we loved."
The 20-year-old died Friday night.
Police said he collapsed during boxing weekend, a decades-old tradition where fraternities would box each other for charity.
Students memorialized him through a prayer walk on campus. Every step they take leads to the path of healing.
Days after his passing, Wray has already managed to leave a permanent footprint on their hearts.
"I know he's smiling down on all of us, proud of us coming together and ready to see us recover and do well," Grinnill said.
The fraternity set up a GoFundMe page to help his family with funeral costs.
