(RNN) - The attorneys general of 18 states and the District of Columbia have sued Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos, charging that she and her department delayed regulations that would protect student loan borrowers who were defrauded by their schools.
The attorney general of Massachusetts led the suit, joined by 18 other Democratic attorneys general that DeVos illegally delayed regulations against predatory institutions that were finalized by the Obama administration and were set to go into effect on July 1.
The rules would make it easier for borrowers to seek forgiveness for federal student loans, and prohibits colleges from demanding that students settle disputes through arbitration rather than in court.
The Trump administration delayed the implementation last month, citing a legal challenge from an association in California that represents for-profit universities. At the time, DeVos said the rules were "a muddled process that's unfair to students and schools and puts the taxpayers on the hook for significant costs," according to Politico.
DeVos is reviewing the suit and gave no comment, a spokeswoman said Thursday.
The case was filed in the Federal District Court of D.C.
