(CNN) - Scripps National Spelling Bee champion Ananya Vinay finally met her match Friday morning when asked to take a shot at spelling "covfefe."

The 12-year-old from Fresno, CA, appeared on CNN's New Day to discuss her win and take a shot at the "word" tweeted by President Donald Trump earlier in the week. She got it wrong, omitting the "v."

Vinay outlasted 291 other kids and fought through several rounds against runner-up Rohan Rajeev to claim the spelling bee trophy and its $40,000 grand prize.

The winning word was "marocain," which is a dress fabric made of a wrap of silk or rayon with a filling of other yarns.

Before taking a shot at "covfefe," Vinay ran through the list of typical spelling bee questions asking for its definition, language or origin and alternate pronunciations, each to laughs and mock answers from CNN's Chris Cuomo and Alyson Camerota.

Trump initially tweeted the made-up word Tuesday, appearing to attempt to spell "coverage" in another attack of the media. He later deleted that tweet and then issued a challenge to determine the true meaning behind it.
